Jason & Amy with Nannies and
Foster Children

By Jason & Amy Kauffman
Short Read

Fostering was not a passion for us as newlyweds. We knew God cares deeply for vulnerable children in need of a family. He makes that clear multiple times in His Word. We were torn between having little desire to be foster parents and knowing there were children who needed parents like us. Although supported by friends, it was with some apprehension that we agreed to become houseparents at New Horizons.

We have now been here for a few months. During that time, we have seen the results of living outside of the life God designed. All the mothers who have children in our care share one heartbreaking result of living life that way. They each went to prison while pregnant.

Jade is one of those mothers. She was faced with needing to make the biggest decision of her daughter’s life—who would care for her. Then she found out about New Horizons. Being able to see her child every week with the goal of reunification and a strong mother-daughter bond convinced her to choose New Horizons. Like with each of the other mothers, Jade loves her daughter, Serenity, very much. It made us want to do all in our power to reunite them as a healthy family.

We are so glad we can give Serenity and the other children in our care a start in a Christ-centered home. It gives them an opportunity to experience stability. The children in our house receive one-to-one care from dedicated nannies. The nannies spend lots of time with them playing, bonding, and praying.

It has filled us with joy to see the changes in our four foster children! We have been so amazed and blessed at the passion each nanny has for the baby she cares for. Elaine is always talking to Serenity who just adores her in return. Brianna will spend her own money buying things for Maliyah and has an awesome relationship with Maliyah’s mom. Arla has a nice way of calming Phoenix and is a blast to have around. Liz has done wonders for Lance and adds maturity and Christ-likeness to our household.

We are so glad we decided to become houseparents. It is really opening our eyes to the needs and suffering of those around us. If God is calling you to come to New Horizons as houseparents, I do not think you will regret it! It will be hard at times, but as for us, we are so glad to be here. Colorado is a beautiful place and God is here working miracles and changing lives! Praise His name!
