Reflections on the InsideOut Dad Class
InsideOut Dad is a weekly class held in prison led by Jim Swartzentruber. Jim invites men to share childhood experiences that affect them today. In class they wrestle with the question of “How can I break the cycle, not only the cycle of incarceration, but the cycle of abuse, and lack of fathers in the home.”
Several men recently shared how the class has impacted them.
“This is my first child and I have no communication with her but taking this class has helped me have empathy for my baby’s mom. Also for my parents because I now realized they didn’t have the same information I do. Thank you Jim for giving me the opportunity to learn what fatherhood really is. Thank you.” — X.
“This class helped me develop tools and skills to be more patient with my children and more mindful of their emotions while I’m interacting with them.” — J.
“Inside Out Dads has helped me to realize where I needed improvement as a father. I feel that I have learned new tools to help me be the father I want to be.”
“I loved the vulnerability of the class being honest and open about our struggles, our hurts and our goals as fathers.” — I.
“Mr Jim had good guidelines in this class on showing us how to stay in touch with our kids, was really open and made it fun and never looked down on anyone. Thank you.”
“Jim is a patient teacher. He is a father in the faith. He allows men to express themselves and open up. That creates an environment that allows a space for men to be vulnerable and open up. Men in this class are very responsive to Jim and the teaching—it builds a strong fellowship among the group.”
We invite you to pray for Jim as he faithfully teaches these classes each week. Pray that the men would find healing and be open to becoming better fathers for their children.
